n May 2015, the Woodburn community approved a $65 million bond. We continue to make progress on bond-funded projects to add space for students, make major repairs to maintain our schools, and improve security/technology systems. These proposed projects are scheduled along a 5-year timeline (2015-2020) for completion.
Summertime is a busy time for Woodburn School District and its contractors to complete new construction and major upgrades to schools while the students are at home. With the end of summer approaching it has been a mad dash to complete everything as planned, and managing our schedule even with construction booming across the state. We may need everyone to practice patience as final details of this summer’s projects are completed, as well as with other school projects just getting under way. The good news is that we’re going to be ready for the start of the school year 2018-19!
Construction of a 2-story addition is nearly complete on the Washington Elementary site, which includes underground water lines for fire suppression system; Fire Department access roads; storm water management system; new covered play area; bus turn-around and staff parking; and a new gymnasium building. Bathrooms throughout the school have been upgraded to be accessible to all. At present the contractors are on site, working on the finishing touches and a final clean. And before they leave, they’ll test the new kitchen equipment that has been installed in the Cafeteria. Also, irrigation and landscaping is going in around the new buildings. We can’t wait to welcome staff and students back to this school next month!
Concurrent with the interior work underway that was funded by the school bond, seismic upgrades are being made at Washington Elementary that were majorly financed by a grant received. In 2017, the Woodburn School District was awarded two grants totaling $3 million from the Infrastructure Finance Authority in 2017. The funds will be used for seismic upgrades to Washington and Lincoln Elementary Schools. The community’s approval of the bond in 2015 helped the school district leverage some of the funding from the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program.
